Triggers activated for the Ethereum merge

The Merge of the Ethereum blockchain has begun and will most likely begin between September 13 and 16. Tuesday saw the activation of the Bellatrix upgrade, the network’s last “hard fork” before the Merge, ushering in Ethereum’s long-awaited switch from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS).

Etheruem creator Vitalik Buterin has twitted the following:

Ethereum’s PoS Beacon Chain, commonly known as its Consensus layer, is prepared for a Merge with Ethereum’s mainnet Execution layer thanks to the Bellatrix update.

The Merge will occur when the Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) number reaches 58,750,000,000,000,000,000,000. It is anticipated that between September 13 and 16, this figure, which will reflect the total difficulty of all mined Ethereum blocks, will be attained.

Currently, predictions see it happening around September 15. The network will fuse its Execution layer with the new PoS Consensus layer when the TTD number is reached, enabling the chain to go on with a new mechanism for creating and authenticating blocks of transactions.

The Merge will reduce the network’s energy consumption by 99.95%, according to the Ethereum Foundation, a nonprofit organization sponsoring the development of the Ethereum ecosystem, and pave the way for future upgrades to its fundamental architecture.

The Ethereum PoW network’s difficulty will reach a threshold at the time of the Merge where mining new blocks will be impossible. The Beacon Chain was originally revealed in December 2020, and The Merge has been planned for a very long period.

Last month, Ethereum completed the third and last practice run for a mainnet Merge by switching its Goerli test network (testnet) from PoW to PoS. The energy-consuming proof-of-work phase of Ethereum will come to an end when the Merge is finished. Sharding and rollups are the next phases in Ethereum’s roadmap for enhancing costs and transaction speeds.
